Proper Use of Metatags
There was a time when search engines used only metatags for indexing web pages and deciding what a website was about. Those days are long gone with the rise of professional search engines such as google that continually strive to deliver ever more relevant results for their user.
Search engines now use algorithms that attempt to analyse your website like a user. They are of course computers and they still cannot make a "human" assessment so rely on more than your content when gauging relevancy.
In particular the metatag "keyword" has lost its potency with, for example, google not even bothering to read this tag.
The other metatags however continue to be important and should be properly used. In particular your description and title metatags should be used to describe your individual pages.
These are not the only metatags, there are a whole list of them each serving a unique purpose.
